DC Public Library’s Winter Read20 Campaign Helps Prevent Mid-Year Learning Loss

(Washington, DC) – With students across the District at home from school over winter break, Mayor Muriel Bowser is encouraging families to incorporate 20 minutes of reading into their holiday routines by participating in the DC Public Library’s (DCPL) Winter Read20 Campaign.

“We want children in the District to gain ground in learning every day,” said Mayor Bowser. “Winter break is the perfect time for parents to read their children a holiday story and keep their children’s minds active to ensure they can finish the school year strong.”

DCPL is recommending parents and students take advantage of the many opportunities presented over the winter break, including:

At the Library
All Library locations will be open over the winter break for youth and families to find a great new read or attend a story time or other family program.

At Home
The Library can help enhance family time by providing great reads and family-friendly activities. This can be in the form of a child reading alone, a caregiver reading to their child, listening to an audiobook on a road trip, or watching a video storybook on a mobile device.

While Traveling
With GoDigital, the Library can travel with families. Animated books, read-alongs, eBooks, audiobooks, language learning videos, educational videos, puzzles, and games are offered through content partners like Kanopy Kids, Tumblebooks, or Overdrive.

Around the District
The Library has partnered with the National Building Museum, Hirshhorn Museum, and Sculpture Garden, National Museum of Natural History, National Air and Space Museum and the National Portrait Gallery to show how many of the city’s free attractions can make learning fun. Videos promoting the museum’s favorite books for families have been paired with great titles from the Library to complement visits to local museums.
